  • TOUR #3 CALDWELL ZOO and TYLER ROSE GARDEN & ROSE FESTIVAL MUSEUM – Sat Sep 13 9am- 4pm, $60 per person (lunch included in cost)
  • Caldwell Zoo had its origins in the Child Development Laboratory, starting in 1937 and operated by the Hogg Foundation and the American Association of University Women of Tyler. It was run by David King Caldwell and his wife, who brought in many animals for the enjoyment of the children. The zoo was officially opened in 1953, and by 1967 featured over 500 animals. In 1970, the zoo was broken into, and several animals were killed. This prompted children of the area to collect money to help restore the zoo. This campaign raised enough money to acquire an African elephant, and was the catalyst to modernize the entire zoo. The city granted an additional 40 acres to the zoo in 1976. Since then, a new elephant enclosure was built, along with giraffe area, reptile, aquarium and Native Texas sections.

The Tyler Rose Garden invites you to immerse yourself in a world of vibrant blooms, fragrant petals, and tranquil pathways. Whether you’re a seasoned horticulturist or simply seeking a serene escape, you should visit the world's largest public collection of roses, with over 38,000 rose bushes representing approximately 600 cultivars, providing a serene backdrop for photography and quiet contemplation. While you are here, don’t miss the Texas Rose Festival Museum and gift shop.
